CHAPTER 10
Ilet my head fall back on the chaise where weâd settled after our meal to hear more of the story. âWhat a cliffhanger,â I moaned. âDo we have to go to bed now?â
Grandmother poked at the dying embers in the fireplace. âYes, Iâm afraid so. But we can pick up tomorrow. Iâll bring lunch from the Inn. Weâll enjoy a nice bowl of soup and a salad, and Iâll give you the next installment.â
I frowned at her but dragged myself from the chaise with a yawning Whiskerina in my arms.
âDonât forget her bed. Iâm sure sheâll sleep in it if you put it on your bed.â
âRight,â I said as I stalked across the room and swiped it from the floor. âDo you think weâll finish the story tomorrow?â
âMaybe. We may need to another day, but we have all the time in the world, Carly. Thereâs no rush. Enjoy the story. Take it all in. Really think about it.â
I bit my lower lip as I considered her statement. âOkay. We wonât rush. But I do want to hear more.â
âAnd you will. There are plenty more to come if youâre game for it.â
âI am,â I said with a smile and a nod as we mounted the stairs. Iâd been intrigued by the stories. I wondered how many more it would take to get to the tale of my music box.
We said our good nights, and I entered my bedroom. With Whiskerina in her bed near my pillow, I changed into my pajamas before I plopped on the bed and opened the music box.
As I brushed my hair, I pondered where it had come from. Had Emma given it to my grandmother? What story came with it?
I couldnât stop thinking about it. Iâd have to really concentrate on working on my painting the next morning to pass the time until my grandmother got home from whatever meeting she was going to.
As I pulled the covers over me, the music still filling my room, I wondered about the guild meeting. My grandmother didnât seem the type. People in town had been friendly to her. Everyone waved at her as we went down the street. But she didnât seem like the person whoâd belong to a club of women.
I drifted off to sleep with those thoughts, but when I awoke, the only thing on my mind was what had happened at Phoenix Hall.
Iâd have to wait all the way until lunch to find out more. I lay in bed with my music box playing for a little while. Whiskerina had crawled out of her bed in the middle of the night and nestled on my pillow. I scratched her soft fur, and she opened her eyes to slits before she began to purr.
âGood morning, Miss Whiskers,â I said with a grin.
We spent a few minutes together before I forced myself out of bed. After a quick shower, I collected Whiskerina and shuffled down to the kitchen for a hearty breakfast of over-easy eggs, bacon, toast, and fresh-squeezed orange juice.
